Applications of Radiofrequency Microneedling
Radiofrequency microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure that entails the use of radiofrequency energy to treat a wide range of skin issues for healthier skin. It’s one of the safest and most effective facial rejuvenation treatments for firmer skin.
Since it’s minimally invasive, it’s suitable for all skin types and allows for fast recovery time and minimal downtime, where patients can easily return to their normal activities after one treatment session. RF treatments can be used for improving the appearance of skin imperfections such as scars and acne. It can also be used to prevent excessive sweating of the body.
1) Skin Rejuvenation
Although RF microneedling may not totally substitute surgical procedures such as rhytidectomy when addressing loose skin, the advantages of RF microneedling are still undeniable, especially in women who want to avoid surgical procedures as much as possible.
For instance, a study has shown that patients with various skin conditions such as wrinkles were able to benefit from microneedling treatments, measured through biophysical assessments, histologic examination, and satisfaction scores.
2) Acne Scars, Enlarged Pores, and Traumatic Scars
As seen in a study, stubborn acne scars and enlarged pores may be addressed by RF microneedling. In this study, 30 patients with these conditions were recruited and were treated with RF microneedling.
They were then assessed through different parameters related to acne scars and enlarged pores, such as Investigator Global Assessment of large pores, grading of acne scars, observation via microscopic and composite images, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), sebum measurement, and patient satisfaction scoring. Clinical improvements were observed in these parameters, except TEWL and sebum measurement.
Similarly, the panel members that provide recommendations for the use of radiofrequency microneedling agreed that surgical scars and other traumatic scars may also be addressed by RF microneedling, in reference to its proven benefits on acne scars.
3) Acne Vulgaris
Acne vulgaris, a skin condition manifesting as blemishes such as pimples and cysts, is due to the clogging of pores by entities such as dead skin cells, bacteria, and sebum.
After 3 months, clinical and photographic assessments of patients who underwent fractional microneedle radiofrequency treatment demonstrated the effectiveness of the treatment. It’s even shown to be more effective than fractional carbon dioxide therapy as the beneficial microneedling treatments showed less downtime compared to fractional carbon dioxide therapy.
4) Striae Distensae (Stretch Marks)
Striae distensae or stretch marks are atrophic dermal scars that occur due to the stretching of the connective tissues of the skin, leading to the shrinkage of the dermal layer and the thinning of the epidermal layer of the skin.
There’s still no current gold standard for its management, although the use of RF microneedling shows promising results. In fact, a study has shown high patient satisfaction in the results of RF microneedling with platelet-rich plasma administration in the improvement of their stretch marks. The investigators also subjectively observed the results, with no reported worsening of the stretch marks.
5) Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis is manifested as excessive sweating of the body, commonly in the palms and soles, even in the absence of the performance of rigorous activities.
A study where the administration of radiofrequency microneedling to patients with hyperhidrosis is compared to a sham device has shown that these patients showed improvements in their symptoms, as evidenced by the improvement in their hyperhidrosis disease severity scale (HDSS). Of the 25 patients, however, only 10 showed no relapse after a year, with the probability of relapse associated with an increase in body mass index (BMI).
How Radiofrequency Microneedling Works
Radiofrequency microneedling is an advanced microneedling treatment that combines the mechanism of action of the traditional microneedling procedure with the penetrating powers of radiofrequency energy to inflict micro-injuries to the skin, leading to the promotion of collagen production and other cascades of wound healing processes for skin repair.
This allows for the procedure to reach deeper layers of the skin through its handheld device that’s a microneedling tool that delivers precise amounts of RF energy.
Ideal Candidates for Radiofrequency Microneedling
An ideal candidate for microneedling is anyone that wants to address skin problems that can be addressed by RF microneedling. However, not everyone is fit for RF microneedling, and this procedure must be avoided by people with the following conditions:
- Use of isotretinoin, an acne medication, within the last 6 months
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Medical history of hypertrophic or keloid scarring
- Autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus
- Chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes
- Metal implants, pacemakers, and other electrical devices at or near the area where microneedling will be administered
- Allergic reactions to the numbing cream that will be used in the procedure
- Problems in wound healing, bleeding, and clotting, such as hemophilia
- Active cold sores and skin infections in the treatment area
