Can Radiofrequency Microneedling and CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing Be Done at the Same Time?

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling is a common procedure used to rejuvenate the skin. With the help of small needles and radiofrequency waves, thousands of Americans get reduced acne scars and an improved skin tone. Similarly, CO2 laser skin resurfacing is a popular treatment for removing fine lines and other cosmetic issues. While some undergo them separately, others may wonder if they can be used all at once.

So can you do RF microneedling treatment and CO2 resurfacing at the same time? Undergoing both RF microneedling and CO2 laser skin resurfacing is possible, but you have to consult with your dermatologist about the possible risks. Recovery time might be longer depending on the sensitivity of the treated area after the operation.

Combining Microneedling and CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing: What You Need to Know

RF microneedling and laser resurfacing are sometimes combined to give patients better results. But take note that patients will need clearance from their dermatologist or surgeon to ensure their safety. Both procedures involve making small cuts below the damaged skin to stimulate collagen production.

Doctors who combine treatments may use laser resurfacing to target the superficial layers. Microneedling is usually used to reach deeper skin layers, although the extent depends on the patient’s aesthetic goals and medical history.

Safety of the Combined Procedures

Both RF microneedling and laser skin resurfacing are accredited procedures. Radiofrequency has been widely used as a skin tightening procedure for over 20 years. Laser skin resurfacing is a newer development but has also gained approval within the scientific community. Specialists are careful about the type of lasers used, as some people are sensitive to ablative lasers.

Combining microneedling and laser resurfacing is safe. Downtime is minimal, and any adverse reactions resolve within the usual time frame of 1 to 2 weeks. It’s essential to look for a board-certified dermatologist that you can consult before the procedure. Specialists with extensive training in radiofrequency and fractional lasers can help you make an informed decision about combining treatments.

How the Combined Procedures Work

Before treatment, patients will undergo a screening to rule out any contraindications. Your healthcare provider will also take pictures of your face to decide on the technique that will be used, as well as the necessary preparations for your skin type. If you have active skin infections (including acne and cold sores), you may be prescribed a short course of antibiotics or antivirals.

Once cleared, the doctor will work with the client to work out a treatment schedule. Some providers may allow the patient to go home after radiofrequency needling, with a laser resurfacing session taking place the following day. Preparations for laser skin resurfacing treatment begin weeks before the procedure, with several smaller operations to help increase the patient’s laser tolerance. The exact number of preliminary tests varies per patient.

To make the procedure as comfortable as possible, patients will receive a topical anesthetic to numb the skin. Doctors may also inject a local anesthetic instead, depending on the location of the treatment area. The skin will also be disinfected with alcohol before the microneedling device makes small cuts in the skin. While cutting through the skin, the needle also emits radiofrequency waves directly into the incisions.

Radiofrequency takes about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the size and severity of the skin condition. After the procedure, a growth solution is applied to the treatment area to encourage cellular regeneration. Another solution is also applied to help soothe any skin irritation.

Depending on the size of the area, you may be asked to take a sedative before the CO2 laser resurfacing. If necessary, the skin will be cleansed to remove oil, grime, and other particles left on the surface. The doctor then takes the appropriate fractional laser and hovers it above the area, targeting the epidermis while also releasing heat into the deeper layers of the skin. Once the process is finished, the area will be carefully bandaged for safety.

Aftercare Tips

Microneedling RF treatment and laser resurfacing is less invasive than plastic surgery. Patients can leave after the procedures finish. The recovery period takes anywhere from 3 to 10 days, depending on the size of the treatment area. Ablative laser treatments that reach deeper into the skin may mean longer recovery periods—sometimes up to 21 days.

While recovering, patients may notice scabbing, peeling, and redness. Skin irritation is normal and tends to subside after the first few days. Ice packs can help reduce any swelling and bruising after the procedure. Your doctor may also advise you to avoid strenuous physical activities, such as weightlifting and combat sports. These activities cause excessive sweating, which may cause bacterial growth.

Make sure to clean the treatment area 2 to 5 times a day using the prescribed saline solution from your healthcare provider. Additionally, replace your dressings every day to avoid developing an infection.

Lastly, it’s important to protect your skin from sun damage. If you have to walk to work during the morning or afternoon, remember to apply some sunscreen. A sunscreen with at least 30 SPF can help prevent sunburns and other adverse reactions. You can reapply it as needed throughout the day. You can also use a moisturizer to help you feel more comfortable while recovering, but make sure to consult your dermatologist first.

Using Radiofrequency Needling and CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing as Treatment

A combination of RF microneedling and CO2 laser skin resurfacing can help improve skin texture, boost collagen production, and reduce acne scarring. Before pursuing these procedures, your dermatologist will talk to you about the possible risks. Some patients with underlying medical conditions may not be suitable for the combined treatment. If you’re unsure about pursuing the operation, don’t hesitate to tell your medical spa about your concerns.

Ideal Candidates for the Procedure

Not everyone can undergo the combined procedures. Those with lighter skin tones are more likely to be cleared for laser resurfacing since they are less prone to harsh reactions. Patients must be in good shape before getting cleared for treatment. If you’re taking anticoagulants for cardiovascular disorders, your doctor has to evaluate if it’s safe for you to pursue the operation.

People who are pregnant or currently taking steroids may be advised to wait before they can pursue treatment. Additionally, if you have the following conditions, you have to obtain a medical clearance before the operation:

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Psoriasis
  • Cancers
  • Cold scores
  • Acute infections

Conditions That the Procedure Treats

RF microneedling stimulates collagen production with the help of radiofrequency waves. The results help make skin grow thicker and smoother. On the other hand, CO2 laser treatments are used to remove scars, stretch marks, and wrinkles. Combining both treatments is ideal for patients who want to resolve a variety of skin concerns in one procedure.

Patients with the following conditions may undergo RF microneedling and fractional CO2 laser treatment:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scars
  • Cellulite
  • Loose skin
  • Surgical scars
  • Crow’s feet
  • Warts

Possible Adverse Reactions

Both procedures are relatively safe, with only minimal side effects occurring during the recovery period. The most common ones include skin irritation, swelling, and pain. You can also expect some discoloration around the operation site. These will subside within 1 to 2 weeks, although the exact time depends on the size of the treatment area.

To help ease pain, you may apply a cold compress to the area. Some doctors also prescribe a topical antibiotic cream to prevent infections from developing. If you feel any sign of infection—including fever, pus leakage, or intense pain—consult your doctor right away.

Other Complementary Facial Treatments

Besides the combination of RF microneedling and laser resurfacing, there are also other facial treatments you may look into. Most of these procedures focus on skin rejuvenation and nourishment. These can help you attain a more youthful look, but make sure to consult with your doctor to minimize any potential risks.

1) TCA Peels

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a common ingredient in many formulations, such as CoolPeel treatment. These peels are used to remove dead skin cells and stimulate new cell growth. This skin treatment can help patients achieve a more vibrant and refreshed look, removing acne scars and other deep-seated marks.

2) PRP Injection

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are sometimes combined with microneedling for faster recovery. Some specialists use PRP on patients who have wrinkles, deep scars, and pigmentation. The procedure uses plasma from your own blood and injects it into the treatment area after microneedling.

3) HydraFacial

HydraFacial is a non-invasive facial therapy used to exfoliate and hydrate the skin. It’s used to minimize fine lines, wrinkles, and dryness, with each session tailored to treat the patient’s individual skin conditions. During the procedure, the provider vacuums facial debris and applies an antioxidant serum to the affected area.

4) LED Light Therapy

If you’ve had minimal results with over-the-counter skin products, your dermatologist or aesthetician might recommend LED light therapy. It’s a minimally invasive procedure that can help with acne, inflammation, and signs of aging. LED therapy doesn’t use harmful UV rays and makes no cuts on the skin, making it safe and convenient for most patients.
