Can You Undergo Microneedling and TriPollar Radiofrequency Treatment on the Same Day?

Microneedling is often used in combination with other treatments to maximize its effects on the skin. When paired with TriPollar radiofrequency (RF) treatment, microneedling helps boost collagen while also tightening loose skin. While both procedures are safe and cause minimal side effects on their own, the case could be different when they’re done within the same timeframe.

So can you undergo microneedling and TriPollar RF treatment on the same day? Yes you can – some specialists perform the two procedures in one sitting for patients who have no underlying medical conditions. Besides mild side effects, microneedling with RF technology is generally safe.

Microneedling and TriPollar Radiofrequency Treatments

Microneedling is one of the most popular procedures for the treatment of fine lines, skin laxity, and acne scars. Although it may seem surprising, combining microneedling with TriPollar RF treatments can help make collagen and elastin production faster and more efficient.

Combining the Procedures

Before the operation, your doctor will conduct a thorough review of your medical history to ensure that it’s safe to proceed. You will then be briefed about the necessary precautions and other protocols. The doctor will also determine what microneedling technique to use for your skin texture.

To avoid infection, the target areas will be thoroughly cleaned using alcohol. A local anesthetic will then be used to make the procedure as painless as possible. During microneedling, the specialist uses small needles to make incisions around the treatment area. The cuts use the body’s healing response for tissue regeneration.

In TriPollar treatment, a special device will first be used to target focal points and massage the treatment area. The applicator will also emit radiofrequency energy into multiple layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production. Thin electrodes then reach under the skin surface to stimulate collagen production and skin resurfacing.

The last step of the procedure is the cooling process—where the patient is relaxed before leaving the operating room or doctor’s office. Barring any complications, you can go home right after the procedure. Your doctor may order a repeat of the TriPollar RF treatment if necessary.

Possible Risks

Similar to laser treatments, microneedling and TriPollar RF treatment carry possible risks. Most patients will feel some swelling and irritation around the treatment area for the first 3 to 7 days. Besides these, the procedures are safe. Make sure your surgeon is board-certified or has undergone training for microneedling and radiofrequency procedures.

People with a darker skin tone are more likely to get side effects from RF treatments. While rare, there is also a chance of developing an infection. Contact your doctor right away if you experience the following:

  • Bleeding near the incision sites
  • Peeling and cracking around the treatment area
  • Pus leakage
  • Fever
  • Fatigue

Additionally, people with autoimmune skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema may not be suitable for the combined treatment. If you currently have an acne breakout or open wounds, your doctor may advise you to wait before proceeding with the operation.

Effectiveness of Microneedling and TriPollar Radiofrequency Treatment

After the recovery period, patients can expect new tissue growth that feels firmer and smoother. The procedures help patients look and feel younger by stimulating collagen growth, which is often decreased in aging skin.

Uses of the Procedures

Besides fixing skin laxity, there are also other conditions that benefit from a combination of microneedling and TriPollar RF treatment. Most specialists use these treatments on the face, but there are also instances where patients undergo procedures for the arms and neck.

The procedures are also used for body and face contouring. Research also shows that radiofrequency can help repair sun damage on the skin. Microneedling and TriPollar RF are used to help with the following conditions:

  • Acne scars
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Stretch marks
  • Sun damage
  • Facial wrinkles and fine lines

Duration of Effects

The effects of RF treatment are most visible after 4 to 6 months. This depends on the severity of the patient’s conditions, as well as their skin type. As for microneedling, improvements can be seen within a few weeks.

Your doctor will use follow-up sessions to assess if both microneedling and TriPollar RF are working as intended. If you have deep-seated marks, you might not see results after undergoing a single treatment session. But for successful cases, the results of the combined treatments last up to 1 year.

Frequency of Treatment

Specialists typically prescribe multiple sessions for microneedling and TriPollar RF treatment. The exact number of sessions in a treatment cycle depends on a variety of factors, including size, location, and severity of the skin conditions.

For radiofrequency therapy, treatment cycles usually last for 5 to 8 sessions every 4 to 6 weeks. Microneedling cycles are composed of at least 3 sessions, spaced out in 3 to 8-week intervals. For deep acne scars or stretch marks, a patient may need a minimum of 5 sessions before seeing visible improvement.

Recovery from Microneedling and TriPollar Radiofrequency Treatment

Like other non-surgical skin tightening procedures, microneedling and TriPollar RF treatment have minimal downtime. Patients can go home after the operations, although you need to have a few hours of rest before returning to regular activities.

Your specialist will advise you on the guidelines for aftercare. They may recommend light physical activity to prevent overexertion and fatigue. You may also have to avoid cosmetic products for a few weeks to avoid skin irritation.

Recovery Time

Most patients can return to doing light work the next day. A few hours of rest should be enough to allow the affected areas to cool down. However, patients may feel a tingling or burning sensation immediately after the procedure.

Besides skin irritation, you may also feel minimal pain after the anesthesia wears off. The pain may continue to be felt for a couple of days. To help ease your discomfort, you may take a dose of Tylenol. Make sure to follow the instructions in the leaflet to avoid overdosing on painkillers. Tell your doctor if the pain doesn’t go away after 3 to 7 days.

Home Remedies and Lifestyle Changes

Some activities may exacerbate side effects. For instance, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol can increase the likelihood of swelling. Doctors typically advise patients to stop smoking and drinking for at least 6 weeks before and after treatment.

Meanwhile, Tylenol can also help you ease the pain during recovery. Just avoid taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen. Consult with your doctor before taking anything besides their prescribed drugs. Aside from Tylenol, ice packs may also rescue pain and swelling.

Additionally, it’s important to eat a protein-rich diet. Refrain from consuming too many sweets as these can contribute to inflammation and skin laxity. Drinking water can also help the body recover its strength and repair tissues at a faster rate—at least 2 liters is the daily recommended amount for adults.

Lastly, make sure to protect the skin during the recovery period. Avoid putting on makeup in the first few days after treatment. Doing so may cause redness, rashes, and other adverse reactions. Apply a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF to prevent sun damage. If your doctor prescribes a topical cream, don’t forget to use it as indicated.
