Suncreen

Summer is here!

We all know sunscreen is the #1 most essential product to any skincare regimen, however, which one is the right one? Yes – our sunscreen portfolio at aNu is HUGE. It is that way for a reason! The more options we have, the more likely you will find the sunscreen that is best for you that you’ll actually enjoy wearing everyday. A 2013 study found that 14.3% of men and 29.9% of women in America reported that they regularly use sunscreen. UNACCEPTABLE!

90% of premature aging (wrinkles, pigmentation, sun spots) is caused by environmental damage.

SUN:

UVA/UVB

UVA rays induce free radicals that cause discoloration and a breakdown of skin’s structural support while UVB (290 to 320 nm) directly damages skin by causing sunburn. UVB is most intense between 10 am – 2 pm, and plays a key role in the development of skin cancers. 95% of sunlight is UVA (320 to 400 nm) and has been shown to penetrate deeper than UVB.

INFRARED (IR)

Infrared radiation (760 to 1440 nm), with a wavelength longer than ultraviolet rays and visible light, accounts for 54% of the total solar energy reaching the skin. In comparison, UVA and UVB only make up 7% of the total solar energy. IR-A is a type of infrared that penetrates the skin deeper than UV, with 50% reaching the dermis. IR-A stimulates the generation of free radicals as well as the collagen-degrading enzyme, MMP-1.

POLLUTION:

OZONE (O3)

Ozone is a colorless gas found both in the earth’s upper atmosphere and at ground level. Depending on its location in the atmosphere, ozone can be categorized as “good” or “bad”. Ozone pollution only comes from ground level ozone and is created between sunlight and chemical reactions found in automobile emissions and chemicals found in household and commercial cleaning products. Ozone pollution oxidizes lipids, depletes skin’s natural antioxidant reservoir, activates inflammatory pathways, and causes collagen degradation.

Do you know the differences between physical and chemical filters?

Chemical sunscreens absorb and hold UV energy like a sponge and slows UV damage by absorbing them. Physical sunscreen acts like a mirror, reflecting and blocking UV energy. The BEST coverage is zinc oxide.

BUT, Sunscreen is NOT enough

Don’t forget to PREVENT + PROTECT – pair your sunscreen with an antioxidant (Vitamin C/E) for full protection against Atmospheric Skin Aging.
