Should You Massage Juvederm?

Lines, wrinkles, sagging skin and uneven pigmentation are all part of the natural aging process. However, these symptoms can also appear for several other reasons, such as alcohol misuse, smoking, and excessive sun damage. At aNu Aesthetics™ & Optimal Wellness in Kansas City, MO, we want you to know that you don’t have to settle for your current appearance. Dermal fillers may be just what you need to achieve your desired aesthetic. Today, we discuss how to care for your skin after a Juvederm treatment session.

What Is Juvederm?

Juvederm is the brand name of injectable dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are famous for their non-invasive anti-aging properties through the use of hyaluronic acid. There are numerous Juvederm formulations that can be injected into various depths and locations to contour your desired aesthetic.

Primarily, these injections are designed to contour your mid-face, add volume to your lips, fill in fine lines, wrinkles and folds and tighten the skin on your face. During your initial consultation, we will review your aesthetic goals to help you determine the best formulas to help you achieve the perfectly contoured face.

Should I Massage the Treatment Site?

There should not be a need to massage the treatment site. After your injections, we will massage the treated areas to ensure there are no lumps. If you follow all aftercare instructions, no lumps will form for you to massage away. If you massage the injection site and the hyaluronic acid shifts outside the targeted region, you will need to come in for a follow-up appointment.

In this case, the only recourse is to inject the treatment site with an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. This natural enzyme is FDA-approved to safely and effectively degrade hyaluronic acid so you can receive another treatment.

What Aftercare Instructions Must I Follow?

Within the first hour of treatment, take Tylenol if you feel any discomfort. NSAIDs and aspirin thin the blood and should not be taken within the first few days of treatment. Within the first six to ten hours of treatment, do not consume alcohol or engage in vigorous exercise. Vigorous exercise can cause the dermal filler to shift out of place.

You should also avoid intense heat, such as from saunas, sunbathing, tanning beds, hot wax, and hot tubs. Wash the treatment site with a gentle cleanser and apply makeup as desired. Make sure you’re also wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least a sun protection factor of 55.

What Else Should I Be Aware of?

Sunscreen should be applied every four hours whether it is hot outside or not. If you don’t like the smell of sunscreen, we strongly recommend a powdered sunscreen, like bareMinerals. Finally, to continue strengthening the skin and reducing skin laxity, take vitamin A supplements. Your skin’s texture can also be improved by vitamin A supplements.
