Dysport vs. Restylane: Which is Better For You

Many people turn to cosmetic treatments as they age. The effects of these treatments range from rejuvenating the skin, to smoothing out wrinkles, to giving the skin a younger and fresher look. Restylane and Dysport are both popular treatments used to enhance facial features and reduce fine-to-moderate wrinkles, resulting in a more youthful, fresher appearance.

So how are Dysport and Restylane different? Both are used to smooth out wrinkles, but use very different methods of achieving that. Dysport is derived from a neurotoxin that relaxes the muscles, while Restylane is a dermal filler that helps restore volume to the skin. If you want to smooth out wrinkles around the forehead, then Dysport should do the trick. But if you’re dealing with wrinkles around the cheeks and mouth, Restylane is the better option.

How Dysport Works

Dysport focuses on glabellar lines. These vertical wrinkles are found on your brow, and they most commonly appear between your brows during your adolescence. They may become more noticeable as you age because of diminished suppleness. When you squint, they become more visible, giving you a frowning or irritated appearance.

Dysport is a non-invasive treatment for dynamic wrinkles created by repeated muscle movements including laughing, smiling, and frowning. It’s a quick and effective treatment that spreads and targets multiple wrinkles at once, making it ideal for frown lines and crow’s feet.

Dysport inhibits the signal from the nerve to the muscles, preventing them from contracting and causing lines and wrinkles to appear. This gives the muscle a chance to rest and relax, as well as your skin a chance to stop creasing from repeated facial movements. Dysport temporarily freezes these muscles to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially in areas of the face where dermal fillers can’t be used.

The Risks of Getting Dysport

Although Dysport is considered a safe medication in general, there’s still a possibility of minor adverse effects. Among the most common are pain, swelling, rashes, and headaches. Such side effects should subside within a few days. If they don’t, contact your doctor.

Nausea, sinusitis, and upper respiratory infection are more serious side effects that may occur. If you experience any of these adverse effects, contact your doctor right once.

Botulinum poisoning is an uncommon but dangerous side effect of Dysport. When the injection travels to another portion of the body, this happens. If you suspect botulinum poisoning as a result of your therapy, seek emergency medical attention.

Botulinum poisoning symptoms include drooping eyelids, twitching, muscle spasms, difficulty swallowing and eating, breathing issues, and speaking difficulties.

Effectiveness of Dysport

While Dysport can help treat frown lines and crow’s feet, it is only recommended for patients who have moderate to severe wrinkles. This treatment is not advised for those with minor wrinkling. A dermatologist can assist you in distinguishing between mild and moderate wrinkles of this type.

Dysport can begin to work after a few days. The effects last 3 to 4 months. One study of 104 Dysport injection patients found an 88.5% effectiveness rate in wrinkle removal 30 days after injection. To sustain the treatment effects, you’ll need to return for additional injections a few months after your first injection.

How Restylane Works

Restylane is a hyaluronic acid-based cosmetic filler brand that’s used to soften wrinkles. Because hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in skin connective tissue, it’s most typically used in cosmetic operations.

Restylane works by adding volume beneath your skin where collagen and other tissue have been depleted. This helps to smooth and elevate the skin, making it appear plumper.

Restylane’s hyaluronic acid clings to your skin, and the acid’s water content adds volume. The acid also attracts more water, which aids in the preservation of the newly acquired volume.

The Risks of Getting Restylane

Restylane is no exception to possible risks like any cosmetic procedure. Bruising, bleeding, infection, allergic reactions, lumps, and uneven skin are all potential side effects of Restylane treatments.

Depending on the treatment area, these normally resolve within 7 to 18 days after treatment. However, contact your doctor if these side effects continue to persist.

When it comes to products like Restylane, those who are using blood-thinning drugs are often advised against it. Discuss whether you would be a good candidate for this treatment with your doctor if you’ve suffered major adverse effects from any drugs or treatments.

Effectiveness of Restylane

The healing period varies from person to person and is determined by how many injections you received and where you received them. Expect some redness, swelling, or bruising, which may take a week or so to resolve. You should also restrict your sun exposure following the procedure to avoid additional swelling or bruising.

You can go back to work right away, however, if you’ve had multiple injections, you may want to take a day off to rest and recover.

The full effects of the treatment are normally visible after a week, however, you’ll notice instant effects because the products add volume when injected.

Because Restylane injections aren’t permanent fillers, you’ll need more rounds of injections to preserve your results. The fillers last between 6 and 18 months, depending on the type of Restylane you received. After you’ve fully recovered, you don’t need to change your routine in any way.

Which Treatment is Right for You

Choose Dysport For Wrinkles Around the Forehead

Dysport is a cosmetic injectable that is made from a purified version of the botulinum toxin. Unlike injectable fillers, which employ a material to “fill in” wrinkles, Dysport uses a substance to relax facial muscles. These injectables inactivate or weaken the facial muscles by preventing the release of acetylcholine, a substance that delivers nerve signals to constrict the muscles. This gives the skin a smoother, younger appearance. Dysport injections now function to prevent new wrinkles from appearing or deepening because the muscles in the face are relaxed.

This therapy can be used to address frown lines and crow’s feet. But aside from the more common types of wrinkles as mentioned before, Dysport can also be used to treat chin cobblestones, downturned corners of the mouth, and other wrinkles or symptoms of age produced by frequent muscle contractions.

Choose Restylane For Wrinkles Around the Cheeks and Mouth

Unlike Dysport, Restylane is a type of injectable filler. This substance is made up of collagen, which is either natural collagen from animals or hyaluronic acid, the same component found in human collagen.

When collagen or hyaluronic acid is injected into problem areas, it “fills in” wrinkles, creases, and furrows in the face, giving the face a smoother and more youthful overall appearance.

Injectable fillers vary in duration depending on whether they’re hyaluronic acid fillers or different types of collagen, but the average injectable filler lasts about 6 months. Unlike Dysport, most injectable fillers can be used on the lips to give them a fuller, plumper appearance.

Restylane is ideal for reducing creases around the lips, nasolabial folds, and around the cheeks.
